Hello. Not a big deal but I thought you’d like to know that the last couple times I translated an SRT file from English to Vietnamese using Google the last dozen or so lines didn’t translate even after manually scrolling through the file a second time even though I received the green text message “Great news! All subtitles translated successfully!”

      Hi GD,

Thank you so much for pointing this out. I think this was a problem with some large files. The good news is that I was able to isolate and fix the problem. Also, with that I have now substantially improved the translation performance for Google and Yandex translators. Thanks again!

Hi, I used this fantastic service a couple of times before, but today it does not work. I first downloaded the automatic subtitle file from Youtube and uploaded it here as always. However, this time I get an error, like invalid file or so. I checked and yes, it looks like this site does not support sbv files. Cannot remember whether my earlier ones were also sbv and Youtube switched to a different format. Anyway, I then went to a website in order to convert the sbv to srt, it was done in a second, then came back here, uploaded it and got just the same error as before. Now, I am going to convert my file to other formats and try again. No idea, what has happened, translating my subtitles used to work flawlessly, but now I am afraid of all the work ahead, which will take hours… I hope this will work again soon, it was such a great help!

      Hi Dirk,

Thank you for your feedback and sorry for the trouble. A standard SBV file should be supported and in my quick test it seems to be working as expected. I just downloaded a subtitle file from Youtube and then try to upload it and it seems to work. May be it’s the content of your file – but I don’t think it should make a difference.

Would it be possible for you to send me a copy of your subtitle file for debugging?

Hi Akbar – we started using Whisper to auto generate SRTs and now when you translate ( in this case English to Afrikaans) it only translate 3/4 of the document? How do I fix this issue?

Are you using Google Translate? If yes, can you please try manually scrolling through subtitles lines to see if the remaining half gets translated? If not, there are chances that you have hit some limit from Google Widget. Try running this incognito or try using Yandex.

Hello. I am trying to translate English subtitles to Turkish and have some trouble. The format is .srt and for some reason it gives error when I upload multiple files. I am using Yandex to translate it. Let me know if this is a known issue or I am the only one with it. Can you please provide a solution for this. The estimated remaining time is increasing and eventhough it shows nearly finished it shows like 10-15 minutes for a really small file size such as 10 kib. Thanks!

Sorry for the trouble Jous! Do you get any particular error message or it just slowly degrades in the performance where it starts taking very long for the translation? If you get an error, can you please share the error message please.

Regarding the gradual slowness or decrease in performance, I don’t think it’s must under my control. Most of the time free translation widget providers like Google or Yandex, implement some filtering on their service to avoid excessive use/misuse of their service. So if you try to translate multiple files, it may get slow as they try to limit the overall translations coming from your machine. I think in that case you can either close your browser window and start one and see if that helps.

Sorry for the trouble Pandrea. If I get this right, you are trying to top-up Balance using PayPal credit card option? If yes, then I have noticed that certain Credit/Debit Cards don’t work on the PayPal (nothing on my end to control that). What have worked in past for some people is that you can link you card to the PayPal account, and first load Balance in your PayPal account using that card. The you can top-up balance on my website using that PayPal account balance. Hope that works.

PS. I have now also enabled support for crypto payments. So that’s also an option if you have access to crypto-currency.

Is there an option to restore sessions when needed? I do download files when I translate them to Vietnamese but the next day when I upload it, the Vietnamese characters all returned errors (seems like an encoding problem for Vietnamese characters).

Thanks for reporting this issue. Yeah, there was definitely some encoding issues with the saved files. This issue is hopefully now fixed, and any downloaded files should now contain the correct text encoding.

I’m translating English into Korean. I have a lot of Korean friends but they don’t have the time to make the whole translation for me so I’m using this site to do it automatically. Is there a way they can check and correct the subtitles on here? I can edit by myself after I apply the translation but is there a way I can send them the URL and they edit it, too?

      Hi Ryan,

Thanks for explaining the scenario in detail. It’s an interesting one and I can definitely see how it would help lot of uses, but is unfortunately not yet supported at the moment. The only workaround I can think of is that you can click on the “In Progress” button to download a file for editing (it contains both source and translated subtitles) and then send that to your friend via email or some other mechanism. They can then upload the file again and do the editing. Obviously, having a URL to share would be great convenient, so will definitely think about supporting it soon.

      Hi David,

Sorry for the trouble there. As far as I know, the VTT format doesn’t include the line numbers. You can look at the sample here:
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WebVTT

So as far as I can tell the format of the translated subtitle is correct. Do you get any error from the Davinci which tells you the format is incorrect?

BTW, I noticed that the first line of the subtitle starts at 1 hour instead of normally 0 hours? Is this intentional i.e. these are second half of a video? If not, I would suggest fixing the timeline of the subtitles. There are some online and offline editing tools which lets you change the timing of the subtitles.

      I hope this helps.

answring your old answer, Davinci resolve start always wih 1:00, i do not now why, it’s it standard way.

anyway’i’m using always paid version and .srt, usually translating in italian, with deepl paragraph mode, but ther are problems, many problem with the arrangment of paragraphs in italian, it duplicate phrases, 40% of them are duplicated, it seems that is able to interpreting paragrafh to send the to the translation api, but than is un’able to reorganize in a proper manner, so i have many many many paragraphs that are very very long inside the .srt, so I changet to GPT 3.5, similar problm, even worse, becuase it loose sync

        • admin

          Hi Dave,

Thanks for getting back to me. Regarding the Davinci start timing, doing a quick search, it looks like a bug/problem with their export code:
          https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=117152

It looks like you can override the default export start time, so you can try with that.

Regarding the translation sync and splitting issues, yeah, I must admit, it’s not perfect. If you have subtitle files, where a sentence spans on more than one lines, most of the machine translation APIs have problem with that, and Chat-GPT is worse because it sometime also remove the subtitle row tags/markers making it very hard to put things back in sync.

I have been tweaking the various API parameters and the row tag markers and I recently introduced a new “Auto Line” mode for the Chat-GPT. This one tries to split translated lines back on the ratio of the words in source and translated lines with some clever logic to also detect sentence endings where possible. Again, it’s not perfect, but for subtitles where a sentence splits on multiple subtitle lines, it’s giving me much better results. I would suggest you to try these and see how it goes.

hey, if chat gpt 4 option becomes stable one day, you should make the chatgpt 3.5 option available for free. And the chatgpt4 option should remain as paid.

Yeah, I can think about that if OpenAI further reduces the cost of GPT 3.5 – which I hope will be the case when GPT 4 becomes more stable and cost effective. Then I will see if it’s feasible to make free for some small translations.

    What’s the difference between GPT 3.5 & GPT 3.5 – 16k?

    | Reply
    • admin

There is no difference in capabilities, but it’s that 16-K supports up to 4 times more tokens than GPT 3.5, and thus may translate slightly better for larger translations – as it maintains more context. It’s also of help when you want to include large Synopsis or Additional Info texts. You can read more about this here:

I assume you are using Google Translator? If yes, Google Translation web widget has a limit on the characters it can translate on a page – mainly to avoid misuse of their service. In that case I would suggest you to see if using Yandex translator helps.

Is this the problem with Google Translator languages list or with all the translators? If you are using Google Chrome, can you please check if Google Translate is auto kicking-in and translating content on the page? Or try running in the browser Incognito mode and see if that helps. If still no luck, can you please share a screenshot of the page with the issue?

Hi! Thanks for your great work with this site! I was using it occasionally only, but now I have some larger projects to translate. Just did a first test with one file and two translations (English and German from Brazilian Português source) by GPT (order#Tk64JiVAo1oKcmrM2UI5). But the supposed German translated file contains an English translation, basically the same as the dedicated English one. What went wrong? Is there a bug when selecting multiple translations from the same source file?

Thanks Johannes for your feedback. Regarding your translation failure, yes, apparently there was a bug which was causing multi-language translation to fail for the GPT translator. I think I have now fixed the issue. So I would recommend you to try this again when convenient. Please remember to clear your browser cache or run in Incognito mode to make sure you are using the latest version of the site resources.

You messed up the translator,…if it was working flawlessly until 1 year ago,..now besides the fact that I’m sitting, I feel bad for nothing else,..some 30 minutes for a translation,…which was usually ready in a maximum of 1 minute,..it doesn’t even do this completely,..when it reaches about 70% it already stops translating,…this with google translate which you had before,..and this nonsense it’s been happening since you decided you wanted money and you spent all that nonsense on money for translation,….it’s the last time I’ll waste precious time with your website. Goodbye,..

Hi, I’m sorry about the bad experience. However, I don’t think this has something to do with my recent changes or fixes. This translation using Google Web widget is more like a hack to make the Google translate the page content without paying for their translation API – and subtitles lines in this case. Google has been slowing tightening the loopholes to avoid misuse of this free service, and I have recently noticed that they stop serving this widget based translation if they notice excessive use from any particular IP. I don’t blame them, they are just trying to improve the quality of their service too.

I have tried to do small tweak/hack in this translation to make Google Translation widget happy. This seems to have slightly improved translation speed, as well as the content which can be translated on the page. If you are doing multiple files translations, try reloading the website after each translation.

The other thing which you can do is that if you are behind VPN, try disabling that to see if that helps. Or may be change the region/state/country in your VPN to see if that helps. I think as long as Google thinks it’s a different user for the multiple translation, it should be good.

Finally, regarding the money aspect, if you believe me, I’m not saving anything from the Paid translation. I just introduced this to make some other uses happy who want to make use of DeepL and OpenAI translators, which are not free, and so expensive, that I can’t afford to offer these for free. This is not a money making website, but just some of my hobby projects. I hope you understand my position.

It’s the feedback from the users like you, which had made it possible to gradually improve this tool to work for best of many others. It’s not perfect, but I’m willing to improve things where possible.

      Hi James,

Thanks for your feedback and I’m glad you find this tool of help. Regarding the ChatGPT 4.0, that one is already in my to-do list, but currently its API is almost 10 times more expensive than 3.5 variant without some significant improvement on translation part. I was thinking to wait few more months until OpenAI reduce the overall pricing of it. However, I’m happy to open this now if there is enough demand from the users.
